This project challenged us to design an apartment that also contained work spaces. It makes us answer how different the living spaces would be organized according to where the work spaces were to be located. In this project we focused on the interaction between different types of workers (studio/desk) and the type of community we wanted to create.

Every floor has studio and desk work spaces that are connected to promote communication between th two different inhabitants, studio and desk. Studio in that they are focused more on the culture and arts, and desk in that they are focused on typical office work.

The units house two people each. I wanted grouped units to allow interaction between the studio workers and desk workers. Normally, these two groups of people would not interact with each other just from the lack of similarities they feel they lack.

From the outside, the studio spaces are clearly seen without much interference from the facade systems, which are juxtaposed by the very thick facade systems imposed onto the residential units.

Each floor had a hole that visually connected each floor, so that the communities wont seperate based on what floor you are in. Visual connection was highly encouraged in this project to show the activity as much as possible not just from the outside but also from this inside.

On the facade of the units, we added bars to block the sun. The staggering of the units have them shade each other.

This studio was focused on a community center that can also be used as an emergency shelter. While keeping the community in mind, we also looked at the sun as a way to shape our building and its spacial organization. The main emergency would be the very frequent floods in the area, which meant that our building would have to respond to those conditions accordingly.

The building sits on columns along the two ends of the L shape, however in the center there are sacrifical spaces to the flood like the lobby space and canoe storage. The L shape is inspired by the location of the sun to allow the spaces to be naturally lit.

All of the MEP and Emergency spaces were fit onto the upper floors. To prevent any damage done by flooding. They were also organized in a way to access all of the other programs without much hassle.

The building is only connected to the ground from the lobby and canoe storage.

All of the rooms were along the outside so that people outside can see activity. Even while they are not within the space of the L.

The longer side of the L faces the west for best sunlight. You can also see the hole in the floors so that both floors can be visually connected.

The structural columns had to be placed along the holes in the floor.
